National Animal Of India
National Animal of India is Tiger, it is also called as the ‘Lord Of Jungles’ and scientifically known as Panthera tigris. Tiger is a member of Felidae family , tiger is about 13 feet in length and 150 kgs in weight. The distinct Recognition of tiger is the pattern of dark vertical stripes that overlay near white to reddish orange fur. Tiger is carnivore and keen predator, Panthera tigris is a native of the southern and eastern of Asia.
Choice of Tiger as National Animal : Due to the grace , agility , strength and enormous power , tiger was chosen as the National animal of India. Tiger is considered as the king of jungle, so it is obvious choice for the national animal category.
Reduce In Number of Tigers: The population of tigers in the whole world is decreasing, due to illegal smuggling of tiger skin and other body parts, very few tigers are left in the world. There are only 5000-7000 tigers in the world. Nepal, China , Bhutan , Bangladesh and Myanmar declare to have a population of 3000 to 4500, India alone claims to have a population of 2500 to 3750. The royal Bengal Tiger , Panthera Tigris species are found throughout India, except in the north-western region.
Tiger Project In India: The extreme threat of extinction of the tiger species from the country , Indian Government launched Project Tiger in 1973. Project Tiger was focused to increase the breeding of the species and to preserve the remaining tiger population in the country. In this project , there are 23 tiger reserves established throughout the country, covers an area about 33,406 sq km for comfortable and safe shelter to the tigers in the natural environment. The population of tiger was much improved in the year 1993. The population of tiger is not too much satisfactory as compared to the effort and money put in the project.
